Surgery Options for Cataract Patients

Brass Eye Center is dedicated to providing comprehensive care for patients, locally, where it’s convenient. That’s why we are proud to offer a range of cataract surgery lens options, each with its own benefits and best fit for patients with unique lifestyle needs and cataract issues. When you make an appointment for a pre-surgery consultation in Lathem or Clifton Park, NY, your ophthalmologist will review these options, working with you to decide which is best in your case.

Standard or Monofocal IOLs

This basic lens implant option provides excellent focus at either reading distances or for driving, but it will require patients to use glasses for optimal eyesight under other conditions. That means patients who opt for clear near vision for reading and detail work will need glasses for far and intermediate sight clarity.

Catalys, Laser Cataract Surgery

The Catalys system uses lasers to perform eye surgery, so the surgeon doesn’t need blades to make cuts inside the eye. This provides a precise solution that’s less invasive, using femtosecond laser bursts to correct astigmatism or to soften cataracts, making removal easier.

Multifocal IOLs

Multifocal implants work a lot like multifocal glasses. The lens has different parts with different focal lengths, allowing you to shift your attention to the right place for the distance you’re currently needing clear sight in. For many patients, multifocal IOLs can reduce or even eliminate the need for glasses to see at distance, intermediate, and near range.

Extended depth of focus IOLs

Extended depth of focus IOLs can be used to provide continuous vision from distance to intermediate range without the need for glasses. While they don’t offer as much near vision as multifocal IOLs, they can be a great alternative for patients who are not candidates for multifocal IOLs, or those who may be particularly bothered by glare and halos.

Toric IOLs

Patients with both cataracts and astigmatism can be helped with this IOL format, which is designed just for that purpose. Since astigmatism is a separate issue from cataracts, those who do not have it corrected during cataract surgery will need glasses at all distances to compensate for the blurring caused by astigmatism. Toric multifocal IOLs are available to treat both conditions while eliminating the need for glasses for most patients.

Optiwave Refractive Analysis

When you get surgery at our eye care clinic, this process is used by the surgeon for guidance and verification, allowing the surgeon to get a more precise IOL placement by confirming office measurements at the time of surgery.

Minimally-invasive glaucoma surgery

For patients undergoing cataract surgery who also have glaucoma, the addition of a minimally-invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) device such as Istent Inject can be performed with their cataract surgery. This only adds a few minutes to the surgery, and can reduce or eliminate the need for eye drops to control glaucoma.
