Since mid-March when the COVID-19/Coronavirus outbreak was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization, the way we live our lives and take care of ourselves has changed dramatically.

We at Brass Eye Center are closely monitoring the situation and are taking a number of precautions to help slow the spread of the virus. We know that many people are feeling fear and anxiety about going out in public, but are still in need of crucial health care, for example, eye care. Therefore, we’d like to outline our response to the current crisis and how we are caring for our patients during this difficult time.

How We're Handling COVID-19

The CDC has already released a number of guidelines for everyone to follow to slow the spread and flatten the curve of Coronavirus transmission. All our staff members are carefully following these recommendations. This is easy for us because as one of the top eye care facilities in Latham & Clifton Park, we already need to follow stringent guidelines for sanitation and cleanliness.

As a healthcare facility, we're required to follow existing CDC guidelines and recommendations to maintain cleanliness and limit the risk of infectious disease transmission. This includes:

  • Checking employee temperatures prior to their shift
  • Wearing masks for the duration of their shift and changing gloves after every patient
  • Regularly changing and cleaning all cloths and linens
  • Keeping non-critical (not used in patient care) surfaces visibly clean at all times
  • Cleaning high-touch surfaces like doorknobs with both detergent and an EPA-registered disinfectant
  • Regularly sterilizing any instruments used in patient care

In addition to these CDC regulations, we follow the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, which requires us to handle all needles and biological waste according to strict guidelines and to use work safety equipment like gloves, masks, and gowns whenever there's a possibility of contact with bodily fluids.

We are also strictly following COVID-19 travel advisory notices. If you have traveled to any of the states listed on the travel advisory notice and have an appointment scheduled in either Brass Eye Center location, you must call the office to reschedule your appointment for after the 14 days of required self quarantine.

These practices are a part of our operating procedure and ensure that we minimize the possibility of infectious disease transmission to the greatest extent possible.

Our Updated Practice Policies

Our practice is also adopting new measures to further ensure the safety of our patients, our staff, and their families. Patients will be called the day before their appointment to have their information confirmed, the screening questionnaire conducted (to limit time spent at reception) and to inform them that they will not be allowed to have anyone come into the Brass Eye Center office with them. Anyone who comes with a patient to their appointment will need to wait in the car unless they are a minor or require assistance. They will also be informed that once they arrive for their appointment they will need to call the office from their car.

Our office is only open for scheduled appointments.

All patient are required to call the office when they arrive for their appointment. The receptionist will confirm the patient’s demographic information and do the initial verbal COVID screening. The receptionist will then mark the patient as arrived.

Once the technician sees this, they will call the patient and start the initial screening over the phone.  This process will limit the length of time the patient will be in the office. The technician will then meet the patient at the front door to take their temperature before they enter the suite. MASKS ARE REQUIRED BY STAFF AND PATIENTS.  If the patient is not wearing a mask, they will be given one before their temperature is taken. The entry doors will remain locked to ensure that this is being done prior to coming into the office. The technician will take the patient over to reception where they will sign their EMR documents, the COVID screening form, and have their cards scanned and copays collected. The technician will then take the patient directly into their room. When the patient is ready to see the doctor they will wait in an area where social distancing will be practiced until the doctor is ready to see them.

All surfaces are wiped down with disinfecting solutions between patients.

When a patient is done with their exam the doctor will walk them out to reception for check out to ensure patients will not be walking around looking for the exits.
