At Brass Eye Center, we're proud to offer comprehensive eye treatments to patients of all ages at both our Latham and Clifton Park, NY offices. Our expert ophthalmologists treat a variety of eye conditions ranging from cataracts to corneal disease, and we strive to make the treatment process as convenient as possible for our patients. However, at our practice, we believe the best way to maintain a clear, healthy vision is by preventing diseases rather than simply treating them. That's why regular eye exams are so critical for long-term eye health.

Why Everyone Should Get Regular Eye Exams

As is the case in most areas of medicine, when it comes to ophthalmological treatment, an ounce of prevention is often better than a pound of cure. This means it's important to take good care of your eyes, but it also means that it's important to treat any problems that do arise as quickly as possible. Most eye conditions are easiest to treat in the earliest stages of the disease, and treatment becomes more involved and more difficult if the condition advances.

Routine eye exams allow us not only to check your vision, but also let us detect eye conditions early on, giving us the best chance of treating them. It also allows us to track your vision over time, so we're able to identify patterns in vision change and spot problems that may be slowly developing. Even if there's nothing wrong with your eyes, it's important to keep up with regular appointments: it's much better to go to the eye doctor and get an all-clear than it is to discover an eye condition has been developing for some time without your knowledge.

You should talk with your ophthalmologist to determine the ideal frequency of eye checkups in your specific case. However, we generally recommend eye exams with the following frequencies:

  • One eye exam in your twenties
  • Two exams in your thirties
  • Eye checkups every 2-4 years from ages 40 to 65
  • Eye exams every year or two after age 65
