  • Robert Brass

Robert Brass, M.D. is a Cornea Specialist, Cataract and Laser Cataract Surgeon, Lens Implant and Refractive Surgeon who is a board certified ophthalmologist, and founder of Brass Eye Center. Dr. Brass is recognized as a refractive laser and cataract surgeon specializing in deluxe intraocular lens implants in the Albany, NY Capital District who specializes in laser cataract surgery using advanced technology, bladeless, no stitch cataract surgery and premium lens implants. Dr. Brass was the first surgeon in the Capital District to be certified to use the Catalys Femtosecond Laser for bladeless cataract surgery. He is also certified to use the ORA system for intraocular lens calculation and positioning. The ORA is an intraoperative device that provides guidance to the surgeon regarding intraocular lens calculation and placement, the magnitude and axis of astigmatism. This is especially useful for patients who have had LASIK surgery and now require cataract surgery. Dr. Brass also specializes in laser eye surgery such as Advanced Surface Ablation for vision correction. Additionally, Dr. Brass specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases, problems and conditions including cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration, as well as providing eye health exams for eyeglasses and contact lenses.

Dr. Brass earned his Medical Degree from the University Wisconsin School Medicine in Madison, WI in 1990. He completed his internship at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Milwaukee, WI in 1991. His Residency in Ophthalmology was at New York Medical College from 1991 to 1994, where he was Chief Resident. He further continued his ophthalmology training with a Fellowship in Cornea, External Disease and Keratorefractive Surgery at the University of Wisconsin in Madison from 1994-1995 and was involved in research in laser vision correction during this time. He continues his dedication to the education of eye doctors and surgeons through his appointment as Associate Clinical Professor at Albany Medical College, and the training of ophthalmology residents at the Albany Stratton Veterans’ Administration Medical Center Hospital, where he serves as an Attending Physician.

Dr. Brass was the first cataract surgeon in the Capital District to be certified to use the Catalys Femtosecond Laser for cataract surgery, and to date has done the most cases locally. In addition, he utilizes the ORA Analysis system which is especially beneficial for prior Lasik patients who need cataract surgery. Each patient is assessed during the pre-operative period using your medical and surgical history, vision needs, and eye health assessment in order to determine and recommend the treatment best for them. Providing each patient with their best possible vision is, of course, the goal and Dr. Brass’s surgical outcomes surpass the national average. Dr. Brass trains resident ophthalmologists from the Albany Medical Center Residency Program in cataract surgery as well.

Dr. Brass has been tending to the eye care needs of the greater Albany, Latham, and Clifton Park, NY area for more than 24 years. He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and American Academy of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He has recently been involved in WIRB approved research studies using Ocular Coherence Tomography to image the cornea and the corneal epithelial surface to aid in the diagnosis of keratoconus.
