Considering your eyes are your windows to the world around you, naturally, you want your eyes to be healthy so you can see clearly. Below are a few tips that can help you maintain good eye health so you can continue enjoying all the wonderful sights this world has to offer.

 Eat a Healthy Diet

Good health, whether it’s overall body health or eye health, begins with the foods you eat. To avoid getting age-related vision problems like cataracts and macular degeneration, you should regularly eat foods rich in Vitamins C and E, lutein, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids. All these nutrients and vitamins that support good eye health are found in foods like leafy greens, oily fish, nuts & beans, citrus fruits, pork, and oysters.

Protect Your Eyes from Injury

Of the more than 2.5 million eye injuries that occur every year in the United States, 90 percent could have been avoided by taking basic safety precautions. Whenever you’re doing something that can harm your eyes like sanding, sawing, or working with chemicals, be sure to wear protective goggles or safety glasses.

Kick the Habit

If you’re a smoker, you’re more likely to develop macular degeneration that your non-smoking counterparts. You’re also at an increased risk for developing cataracts. You already know that smoking isn’t good for you. To protect your overall health along with the health of your eyes, kick the habit once and for all!

Wear Sunglasses

This is why you should always wear good quality sunglasses when outdoors. The best kind to choose are wrap-around sunglasses with lenses that block 99 to 100 percent of all UV light.

Visit a Clifton Park Ophthalmologist

You should have your eyes checked by an ophthalmologist at least every two years. This type of visit will help determine your risk for developing eye diseases. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, your eye doctor will also tell you whether your not you need to get new glasses or lenses due to changes in your vision.

Watch for Vision Changes

If you start noticing your vision is changing, visit an Albany eye doctor right away. Whether you start having hazy vision or difficulty seeing clearly after dark, it’s imperative to undergo an eye exam to find out why.
