Can You Prevent Cataracts?
Posted on 01/08/2018

At the Brass Eye Center, our mission is to help patients in Latham and Clifton Park, NY maintain crystal-clear vision through superlative eye care. As our patient's age, one of the most common problems they experience are cataracts: a gradual clouding of the lens of the eye that obscures vision. Cataracts are one of the most common vision problems, affecting more than half of Americans by age 80 – but is there anything you can do to prevent cataracts?

Tips for Preventing Cataracts

While research is so far inconclusive, there doesn't seem to be a clear-cut way to prevent cataracts entirely. That said, there are many steps you can take to lower your risk of developing cataracts or to prolong the onset of cataracts. Here are a few simple ways to lower your risk of cataracts:

  • Avoid Tobacco Products: In addition to many other negative health outcomes, smoking nearly doubles your risk of developing cataracts. Quitting smoking is a great way to lower your risk of cataracts – and if you haven't picked up the habit, this is even more incentive to avoid it.
  • Eat a Healthy, Balanced Diet: Eating a diverse, healthy diet that features a wide range of nutrients can both prevent your risk of cataracts and promote healthy eyes overall. Including Omega-3 fatty acids, high-antioxidant foods, and plenty of vitamins in your diet will reduce your chances of cataracts.
  • Limit Alcohol Intake: Similar to smoking, alcohol increases your risk of cataracts. Consume in moderation to lower the risk of cataracts – or better yet, not at all.
  • Wear Sunglasses: Chronic exposure to bright sunlight can also put your eyes at a higher risk for cataracts. Wear UV-blocking sunglasses when you go outside to protect your eyes from the sun and help prevent cataracts.
  • Visit Your Eye Doctor Regularly: Maintaining regular, preventive vision checkup appointments with your Latham ophthalmologist is another important step for preventing cataracts. Keeping up regular visits can help to spot any vision changes before they become severe, giving you the best chance at effective treatment and a lifetime of clear vision.
